Jim Smyth is a farmer on a constant journey of improvement and reaching new, higher standards.
Operating a grass-based system calving cows in the spring as well as the autumn, Jim milks some 180 cows over the course of the year.
Hygiene and cow comfort are key to Jim’s herd performance. Jim takes part in the innovative Lakeland Dairies Transition cow Management System (TMS) programme which is solely aimed at improving herd health and cow yield.
Jim’s three children Sinead (10), Peter (8) and Cormac (4) are all involved in the farm too.
“The family farm model has served the Northern Ireland industry very well and seeing your family grow up as the farm also develops and grows is a tremendous feeling. I’m very proud to see all the family out on the farm here,” Jim says.
